Professional Supervision
Mentoring and guidance for professionals seeking education support for eating disorder, disordered eating, Intuitive Eating, and weight inclusive work
Hi, I’m Dana!
I’m a:
Registered Dietitian since 2010, specializing in EDs since 2015
Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor
iaedp Certified Eating Disorder Specialist & Consultant
Private practice owner since 2019
My (abbreviated) story…
When I became a dietitian I didn’t know what I wanted to do in the field, but I did know one thing - it wasn’t working with eating disorders. Having received very little training in or exposure to eating disorders through my dietetics training, working in this space felt totally intimidating to me. Little did I know, that regardless of my area of practice eating disorders and disordered eating were going to show up in some capacity. It was that realization that led me down a path of personal and professional self-discovery I never would have imagined. And just five years later I found myself totally immersed in the world of eating disorders, disordered eating, weight inclusive care, and mindful and Intuitive Eating and knew then that I had found my calling.
Since then I’ve poured myself into learning all that I can about helping people heal their relationship to food and body and I can say that, without a doubt, professional supervision has been the single most valuable investment I’ve made in growing my confidence and skills as a clinician. I am so thrilled to now offer this service to other clinicians!
Areas of special interest
I specialize in outpatient, adult eating disorder treatment, Intuitive Eating, and weight inclusive practice, with a special interest in binge eating disorder, perceived loss-of-control or compulsive eating, emotional eating, chronic dieting, and body image distress. I have experience working with the full range of eating disorder diagnoses in the outpatient, adult population and am happy to support you with these cases, too!
While I LOVE supporting clinicians who are working in disordered eating and eating disorder spaces, I also LOVE supporting clinicians who work in other areas of practice but inevitably still encounter disordered eating in their client population. So, while of course consultation is a fit for eating disorder clinicians, it’s also a fit for non-eating disorder clinicians wanting to feel more confident in navigating disordered eating when it inevitably appears in their area of practice.
Why Supervision?
Supervision is a space for you to seek guidance and support regarding any and all of the questions, challenges, and concerns that emerge throughout your client work. It’s tailored to your present-moment clinician needs, whether that be processing a complex client case, figuring out the next steps in a client care plan, processing your own feelings that are emerging as part of your client work, creating and maintaining boundaries in your therapeutic relationships, and so much more.
So, when you end a client session and think, “did I handle that correctly?” or, “was that the right thing to say?,” or, “I have no idea what to do next to support this person,” supervision provides a safe place to figure it out with the support from someone who’s been there before.
Supervision is different from other forms of education and training because it moves you out of the theoretical and into the real-world and real-time application of all the things you’ve listened to, watched, and read about nutrition counseling and client-care for eating disorders and disordered eating.
Who I work with
Whether you are brand new to eating disorder work, just learning about Intuitive Eating, or have been in this space for a while, we can all benefit from some extra support when navigating this challenging work.
Maybe you are identify with one of these, very common, client profiles…
You love Intuitive Eating as a concept, but struggle with applying the principles in practice.
You’re familiar with Intuitive Eating, you’ve spent some time learning about the principles, you’ve started integrating the framework into your practice, but sometimes get lost in the nuances of the practice and find yourself feeling stuck figuring out how Intuitive Eating “fits” with other aspects of your practice. Like what if a client is diagnosed with diabetes or high cholesterol? Or has IBS? Or has a food allergy or intolerance? Then where does “unconditional permission to eat” fit? Or you’re wondering, at what point in eating disorder recovery is it appropriate to introduce Intuitive Eating? Or your client experiences food insecurity and your unsure if Intuitive Eating is even an option.
You feel like a salmon swimming upstream trying to embrace a weight inclusive approach to care.
You know that diets don’t work. You’ve witnessed the harm that the pursuit of intentional weight loss can cause. (Maybe you’re even grappling with the awareness that you’ve perpetuated some of that harm.) You want to fully commit yourself to a weight-inclusive approach to care but can’t entirely grasp how to do that when the systems in which you are operating and the clients you are seeing are still so invested in a weight-centric model of health. Gah, where do you even begin!
Your heart and soul are 100% that of a helper, but eating disorders are totally outside of your comfort zone.
Eating disorder referrals make your heart race and your palms sweaty because dietitian school definitely didn’t prepare you for these cases. You want to help but are so afraid of saying or doing the wrong thing. You’d love to feel more confident in your ability to support these clients, but opportunities to learn how to do that don’t really exist in your current role. Or maybe your area of practice is outside the world of eating disorder treatment, but you know that regardless of your area of practice eating disorders and disordered eating show up and you want to feel more confident in your ability to support these folks!
You’ve been working with eating disorders or disordered eating for some time but still find yourself in situations where you just don’t know what to say or how to respond.
In general, you feel pretty confident in your eating disorder/disordered eating knowledge and skillset, but there are some cases that just leave you scratching your head. You find yourself wondering, “do I really know as much as I thought I did?” Or feeling like, “I’ve tried everything and this person still isn’t getting better.” You need a sounding board to talk through these challenging scenarios, brainstorm options, and feel reassured that you really do know what you are doing. Because this work is challenging and can also feel pretty isolating, especially if you work independently in your clinical role.

FAQs
-
Absolutely! I love supporting professionals of all kinds who are interested in how they can help support folks with food and body image concerns and to create weight inclusive spaces.
For example, I’ve worked with personal trainers who want to create a safe and inclusive space for all bodies in their studios and figure out how to navigate sticky body and diet culture conversations.
-
It’s totally OK if these are new concepts to you. Curiosity and a desire to learn more is all that’s needed! This will be a space to ask questions and learn more.
-
I meet with most clients bi-weekly or monthly. Of course, if something comes up and you want a session between our regularly scheduled sessions, we’ll work something out to make that happen.

That depends on your needs! The supervisee really sets the agenda for the session. Usually, a significant portion of the session will be spent discussing client cases, but other common topics include: marketing your services to fill your caseload, discussing topics that are trending in popular media (hello weight loss drugs), navigating your own feelings of overwhelm, burnout or self-doubt that might emerge, coordinating with other providers, determining when and how to refer out clients, and more!

Yes! In a few ways, actually. In addition to individual supervision services, I collaborate with a psychologist to offer a small, multidisciplinary, closed group supervision cohort. Join the professional email list below to be notified when that goes live!
I also offer guest consultation services for organizations looking for guidance on supporting folks with eating disorders/disordered eating (e.g., group therapy practices, primary care offices, etc.)
